Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that his administration has invested over N8.4bn to support more than 12,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises across the state over the last four years.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative event held at LTV 8, Ikeja, and organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Sanwo-Olu reiterated his commitment to building an inclusive economy that equips every Lagosian with the tools to thrive.
“When we uplift one entrepreneur, we uplift an entire family, a whole community, and ultimately, the future of Lagos,” the governor stated. “Over the last four years, this administration has invested over N8.4bn to support more than 12,000 MSMEs, showcasing our steadfast commitment to fostering an economy where businesses can thrive and no one is left behind.”
At the event, 1,700 beneficiaries who had received training in vocations, including sewing, catering, agriculture, photography, carpentry, and hairdressing were empowered with financial support and necessary business equipment.
“Today, we’re thrilled to empower 1,700 dedicated individuals – women, men, and youth – who embody the future of our state’s economy,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Through this support, we’re not just providing start-up capital; we’re unlocking potential, restoring dignity, and opening doors to brighter, more prosperous lives.”
Addressing the beneficiaries directly, he advised, “What you’re receiving today is more than just a grant; it’s a tremendous opportunity. Use it wisely, grow your businesses, create jobs, and support others. Let this be the beginning of something great.”
Sanwo-Olu also lauded the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and its leadership for the implementation of the MESI programme.
“I thank the Commissioner, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, and the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, along with the entire MWAPA team for their dedication and professionalism,” he said.
In her remarks, Dada described the initiative as a pillar of the state’s social inclusion and entrepreneurship strategy under the THEMES+ agenda.
“Since its inception, this initiative has directly empowered thousands of indigent Lagosians by providing equipment, training, and start-up capital,” the commissioner noted. “Our ministry ensures that the state government’s pledge to ‘leave no one behind’ is backed by concrete action.”
She highlighted the existence of 19 tuition-free vocational centres across the state, which are open to all regardless of religious or ethnic background.
“Beyond numbers and metrics, what truly matters is the dignity restored to each individual who moves from dependency to independence,” she added, urging beneficiaries to “invest wisely and pay it forward by mentoring others.”
Also speaking at the event, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, who represented the First Lady, encouraged the beneficiaries to embrace dignity in labour.
“There is dignity in labour. Be proud of your trade—whether you’re a caterer, barber, or fashion designer,” she said. “A wedding will come and go, but your skill and business are your future. Always ensure your service is top quality so customers will return—and recommend you to others.”
