Yesterday in New York City, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State joined global leaders, investors, and key figures in the sports and entertainment industries at the Building Africa’s Sports & Entertainment Ecosystem Breakfast Roundtable. The high-level event was held on the sidelines of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Business Forum and the United Nations General Assembly.
The roundtable served as a strategic platform to discuss how Africa can unlock the full potential of its sports and entertainment sectors through targeted investments and sustainable partnerships. Participants explored the critical elements required to build world-class infrastructure, foster long-term collaborations, and generate viable opportunities for the continent’s rapidly growing youth population.
In his remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of sports and entertainment not only as tools for cultural expression but also as powerful drivers of economic growth and job creation. He highlighted the untapped potential in these sectors and the need for African governments to work closely with the private sector and global partners to scale innovation and expand opportunities.
The governor also shared insights from Lagos State, one of Africa’s most vibrant creative and sporting hubs. He spoke about ongoing initiatives to develop local talent, improve infrastructure, and position Lagos as a leading destination for creative industries in Africa. From music and film to fashion and athletics, Lagos continues to be a fertile ground for young people to thrive and build global careers.
“This was more than just a conversation,” Governor Sanwo-Olu noted. “It was a moment to tell the Lagos story — one of creativity, resilience, and ambition — and to invite the world to be part of our journey.”
The event concluded with a shared commitment among attendees to work collaboratively in building an ecosystem that supports Africa’s next generation of athletes, artists, and creators.
