Councilors of Agege Local Government Area (Lagos State) have taken formal steps to seek approval from Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, Governor of Lagos State, for the confirmation of Abdul‑Ganiyu Vinod Obasa as substantive Chairman of the council.
At a plenary session held on Wednesday the leader of the legislative arm, Hon. Adeshina Haruna, announced that the Executive Chairman, Alhaji Tunde Azeez, had resigned his post citing persistent health challenges — the letter of resignation having been submitted and read in the session.
Following the resignation, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, who had been acting in the role since the Chairman’s medical leave, was unanimously endorsed by the council’s seven members to take over as substantive chairman.
Hon. Haruna further stated that the council will forward the resignation and endorsement to the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs for onward transmission to Governor Sanwo-Olu for final ratification in accordance with the constitution.
In his remarks accepting the appointment, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa pledged to build on ongoing projects in Agege, deepen grassroots engagement and strengthen collaboration with community stakeholders.
Political watchers say the move effectively cements a succession plan within the council, given that Obasa had previously been flagged as a candidate for the chairmanship ahead of the July 2025 elections and that key stakeholders had earlier signified support for his ambition.
As things stand now, the ball moves to Governor Sanwo-Olu’s desk for formal approval. The confirmation of Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa will bring to an end the acting-period and set a new administration in motion in Agege LGA.
