Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable development and climate resilience across the state. The Governor made this known at the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, where policymakers, environmental experts, development partners, and stakeholders convened to chart practical solutions for a sustainable and climate-smart future.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that for Lagos, climate change is not a distant conversation but a pressing reality that impacts the daily lives of its over 22 million residents. With its strategic location and 187 kilometres of coastline, Lagos remains highly vulnerable to the effects of rising sea levels, flooding, and other climate-induced challenges.
“Climate change affects our homes, our economy, and our way of life,” the Governor said. “We do not see it as an abstract global issue; we live with its consequences every day. That is why our administration continues to pursue proactive and innovative solutions to safeguard our environment and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Highlighting the State’s ongoing efforts, Governor Sanwo-Olu pointed to major interventions designed to mitigate environmental risks and promote green growth. These include strengthening the State’s coastal defences through the Great Wall of Lagos Project, an ambitious initiative aimed at protecting coastal communities from erosion and flooding.
He also noted the progress of the Omi Èkó Initiative, which seeks to expand and modernize Lagos’ water transport system, providing cleaner and more efficient mobility alternatives while reducing road congestion and carbon emissions.
In a landmark move toward green finance and sustainability, the Governor announced the introduction of Lagos Carbon, Africa’s first domestic environmental market. The platform is designed to stimulate private-sector investment in renewable energy, waste management, and other climate-friendly projects.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that the State’s climate agenda is centered on protecting lives, creating new economic opportunities, and building a resilient Lagos that can thrive despite global environmental challenges.
“Our focus remains steadfast — to build a Lagos that not only adapts to climate realities but leads the way in sustainability across Africa,” he concluded.
