Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have called for heightened scrutiny of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, emphasizing the need for improved security measures and substantial investment in road infrastructure across the state. The proposed budget, presented last week by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, successfully scaled its second reading after extensive deliberations on the House floor.
Tagged the “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” the 2026 fiscal proposal is built on four core pillars: poverty eradication, a people-oriented development approach, enhanced infrastructural growth, and effective governance. These focus areas, according to the government, are designed to create a safer, more inclusive, and economically vibrant Lagos State.
While presenting an overview of the budget, Chairman of the House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, Sa’ad Olumoh, noted that the proposal was carefully crafted to consolidate the gains recorded by the Sanwo-Olu administration. He explained that the budget reflects the government’s intention to sustain ongoing developmental projects while addressing emerging challenges, especially in the areas of security and transportation.
Lawmakers, however, stressed that thorough examination of each budgetary component is necessary to ensure proper allocation and utilization of public resources. Several members highlighted the urgent need for improved security infrastructure, citing increasing pressures on law enforcement due to population growth and rapid urban development. They also called for a significant boost in road funding to tackle the persistent issues of traffic congestion, road degradation, and the infrastructural needs of expanding communities.
The House reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with relevant ministries and agencies during the budget defense sessions. According to the lawmakers, this step is crucial to guaranteeing transparency, accountability, and alignment with the state’s long-term development objectives.
With the bill now moving to the committee stage, the Assembly pledged to ensure that its final version truly reflects the aspirations of Lagos residents and supports the vision of shared prosperity for all.
