Lagos State has recorded another major global milestone as Lagos Fashion Week emerged winner of the prestigious 2025 Earthshot Prize, becoming the first fashion platform in the world to receive the honour. The award recognises outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and responsible innovation.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu received the award in Lagos from the leadership of Lagos Fashion Week, led by its Chairman, Mr. Tokunbo Akerele, and its Founder and Executive Director, Mrs. Omoyemi Akerele, who formally presented the prize on behalf of the organisation.
The governor described the recognition as a strong validation of the development direction Lagos is pursuing, particularly its emphasis on responsible growth across all sectors of the economy. He noted that the achievement demonstrates how sustainability can thrive even in industries such as fashion, which are not traditionally central to climate and environmental discussions.
Founded in 2011, Lagos Fashion Week has evolved from a modest platform showcasing African designers into the most influential fashion event on the continent. Over the years, it has consistently elevated African creativity while positioning Lagos as a global hub for innovation, culture, and enterprise.
Beyond the runway, Lagos Fashion Week has expanded its impact by promoting ethical production practices, sustainability in sourcing, fair labour standards, and more conscious consumption within the fashion industry. Its programmes continue to challenge designers, manufacturers, and consumers to adopt environmentally responsible habits without compromising creativity or commercial success.
The Earthshot Prize win places Lagos Fashion Week—and by extension Lagos—on the global sustainability map, reinforcing the city’s growing reputation as a leader in creative excellence and forward-thinking policy. The governor commended the organisation for carrying African fashion confidently onto the global stage while setting new standards for climate-conscious innovation.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that align creativity, economic growth, and environmental responsibility, describing the achievement as a proud moment for Lagos, Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.
