The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to military veterans with strong support for the Nigerian Legion as activities begin for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
Speaking at the State Executive Council meeting, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, received members of the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Legion, marking the official kickoff of events to honor fallen heroes and living veterans of Nigeria’s armed forces. The governor emphasized that Lagos State deeply values the sacrifices made by men and women who served the nation, often at great personal cost.
To demonstrate this appreciation, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced a ₦100 million financial commitment to support the operations of the Nigerian Legion in Lagos State. In addition, the state government will provide two utility vehicles to enhance the Legion’s logistical capacity and improve its day-to-day activities.
Beyond financial and operational support, the governor also revealed plans to provide four two-bedroom apartments for members of the Legion. These housing provisions, alongside food items and other essential supplies, are aimed at improving the welfare and living conditions of veterans, particularly those facing economic or health challenges.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity are sustained by the courage and dedication of members of the armed forces. He described the annual Emblem Appeal as more than a ceremonial tradition, stressing that it is a moral responsibility owed to soldiers who lost their lives in service to the country and to those who returned home with life-altering injuries.
“This is our way of saying thank you,” the governor stated, adding that remembrance must go beyond words to include real, tangible support. He reaffirmed Lagos State’s resolve to stand by veterans and ensure they are not forgotten.
The initiative underscores Lagos State’s leadership role in honoring national heroes and promoting a culture of gratitude, remembrance, and responsibility toward those who fought to keep Nigeria free and united.
