Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged church leaders and Christian faithful to continually pray for peace, wisdom in leadership, and divine protection for members of the armed forces who safeguard the nation.
The governor made the call on Sunday while speaking at the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Thanksgiving Service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja. The annual event was organised to honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel and to reflect on the importance of national unity and peace.
Sanwo-Olu commended officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their dedication, courage, and selfless service to the country, noting that their sacrifices often come at great personal cost. He described the remembrance celebration as a solemn reminder of the responsibility shared by all Nigerians to support those who defend the nation’s sovereignty and security.
According to the governor, the church plays a vital role in nation-building, particularly through prayers for peace, moral guidance, and the promotion of unity among citizens. He stressed that spiritual support for leaders and security personnel is essential, especially in challenging times.
Sanwo-Olu further stated that the essence of the remembrance goes beyond honouring fallen heroes, as it also challenges Nigerians to promote unity, act responsibly, and show mutual respect in their daily interactions.
“A nation divided weakens its defenders, but a nation united strengthens its peace,” the governor said, emphasizing that unity remains a critical pillar for sustainable peace and national development.
He encouraged religious leaders to continue using their platforms to foster harmony, tolerance, and understanding across ethnic, religious, and social lines. Sanwo-Olu added that collective commitment to peace and unity would not only support the armed forces but also ensure a safer and more prosperous Nigeria for future generations.
The thanksgiving service featured prayers for the nation, its leaders, and security agencies, as well as tributes to fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in the service of their country.
