Lagos State Government launches investigation into alleged medical negligence at private hospital
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of medical negligence following the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The child reportedly died after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lagos.
The Lagos State Government confirmed the development in an official statement released on Saturday, noting that the decision followed a detailed account submitted by Adichie outlining the circumstances surrounding her son’s death. According to the statement, the governor directed relevant health authorities to immediately commence a full-scale probe to determine whether medical protocols were breached and to establish accountability where necessary.
Nkanu Nnamdi, one of Adichie’s twin sons, was said to have died on January 6 after a brief illness. The author reportedly raised concerns over the quality of care her child received, prompting public attention and calls for transparency within the healthcare system, particularly among private medical facilities operating in the state.
The state government emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that healthcare providers adhere strictly to professional and ethical standards. It assured residents that the investigation would be thorough, impartial, and guided by existing medical regulations and laws.
“The Lagos State Government takes allegations of medical negligence very seriously,” the statement read, adding that any healthcare facility or professional found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with the law.
The incident has sparked renewed debate on patient safety, regulatory oversight, and accountability in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. Many stakeholders, including medical professionals and civil society groups, have called for stronger monitoring of private hospitals to prevent similar tragedies.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed condolences to the Adichie family and reiterated the state’s resolve to ensure justice, transparency, and improved healthcare delivery for all residents of Lagos State.
