The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent repair works on key bridges along the corridor. The closure is aimed at addressing damaged expansion joints at the Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and the Arepo–Punch Bridge axis.
According to the Ministry, the planned repairs are critical to maintaining the safety and structural integrity of the affected bridges. Expansion joints are essential bridge components that help absorb movement caused by traffic loads and temperature changes. When worn or damaged, they can compromise road safety and driving comfort, making timely intervention necessary.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remains one of the busiest and most important highways in the country, serving as a major link between Lagos and several other states. The road supports heavy daily traffic, including commercial vehicles transporting goods and services, which places significant pressure on its infrastructure. The Ministry noted that the repair works are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the expressway remains safe and reliable for all road users.
During the six-week period, traffic movement will be partially restricted, with repairs carried out in phases to minimize disruption. Motorists should expect lane closures around the affected bridge sections, while traffic management measures such as warning signs, diversions, and the presence of traffic officials will be put in place to ease congestion and ensure safety.
Road users have been advised to plan their journeys ahead of time, allow for possible delays, and comply with traffic instructions while the repairs are ongoing. Where possible, motorists are encouraged to consider alternative routes, especially during peak hours.
The Ministry of Works appealed for patience and cooperation from the public, emphasizing that the temporary inconvenience is necessary to prevent more serious structural issues in the future. Upon completion of the repair works, the affected bridges are expected to be safer, more durable, and better equipped to handle increasing traffic volumes, ensuring smoother travel along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
