The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been commended for intensifying efforts to improve waste management and environmental sanitation as part of his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, healthier, and more livable Lagos.
In recent weeks, the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of the Environment and relevant agencies, has stepped up waste evacuation, enforcement of sanitation regulations, and community-level environmental interventions across major districts of the state. These actions are targeted at addressing long-standing waste challenges in densely populated areas while improving public health and urban aesthetics.
Communities such as Mushin, Ajegunle, Agege, Alimosho, Oshodi, Ikorodu and parts of Lagos Island have witnessed increased waste collection activities, desilting of drainage channels, and stronger engagement with residents and waste operators. The renewed focus also includes monitoring of waste disposal practices, improved coordination with Private Sector Participants (PSPs), and public sensitisation on responsible waste handling.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has repeatedly emphasised that environmental cleanliness is not only a government responsibility but a shared civic duty, noting that effective waste management plays a critical role in flood prevention, disease control, and overall quality of life in a fast-growing megacity like Lagos.
Reacting to the development, Adewale Adeosun, Coordinator of the Epe Youth Forum, commended the governor’s practical approach to environmental governance.
“A cleaner Lagos is a healthier Lagos. The renewed attention to waste management and sanitation shows that the government understands how closely the environment is linked to public health, safety, and dignity,” he said.
He added that consistent enforcement and community engagement would help entrench better environmental habits, especially among young people and residents in high-density areas.
Why This Matters
* Improved waste management reduces flooding and disease outbreaks
* Cleaner communities enhance public health and quality of life
* Environmental discipline supports sustainable urban development
* Community participation strengthens long-term impact
The Epe Youth Forum encouraged residents to cooperate with sanitation officials, comply with waste disposal guidelines, and support efforts aimed at keeping Lagos clean and safe for all.
With sustained environmental action, the Sanwo-Olu administration continues to demonstrate that effective governance is not only about infrastructure, but also about everyday policies that directly improve the lives of Lagosians.
