The Northern Youth Assembly has commended the Nigerian Senate for its recent passage of the Electoral Act Amendment 2026, describing it as a strategic, responsible, and forward-looking measure that strengthens Nigeria’s democratic institutions, reinforces national stability, and restores public confidence in electoral governance.
According to the Assembly, the amendment demonstrates that Nigeria’s legislative leadership is committed to a transparent, accountable, and practical approach to electoral reform, balancing technological innovation with the realities on the ground. The legislation ensures that election results are transmitted electronically only after verification, with physical, signed, and countersigned forms serving as the primary reference in case of network failures. This approach safeguards the credibility of election outcomes and mitigates the risks associated with misinformation, manipulation, or technological failure.
“Responsible legislative action is the cornerstone of national stability,” said Awakulu Mogaji, President of the Northern Youth Assembly. “By prioritizing verification, transparency, and accountability, the Senate has ensured that election outcomes reflect the will of the people while protecting citizens’ confidence in democratic institutions.”
The Assembly emphasized that the amendment is particularly significant for young Nigerians, who constitute the majority of the electorate. For youth across the North and the nation at large, credible elections are critical not just for political participation, but for fostering civic trust, creating opportunities, and promoting inclusive governance.
“Young Nigerians are eager to participate in shaping the future of our nation,” Mogaji explained. “When elections are transparent and trustworthy, it motivates youth engagement, strengthens civic responsibility, and reduces apathy. The Senate has set an example for all arms of government to follow.”
The Northern Youth Assembly further noted that the reform addresses longstanding debates around real-time electronic transmission of results. While technology can enhance transparency, disparities in internet and power infrastructure across Nigeria can hinder uniform application. By retaining signed and verified forms as the primary source while allowing electronic transmission where feasible, the Senate has designed a system that protects both accuracy and fairness.
In addition to promoting credible elections, the Assembly emphasized that the amendment contributes to national stability by reducing potential post-election conflicts and misinformation campaigns. By ensuring that the process is verifiable, inclusive, and accountable, the legislation strengthens social cohesion and promotes unity across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
The Assembly also called on civil society organizations, political parties, and citizens to actively support and monitor the implementation of the amended Act. They urged all stakeholders to resist attempts to politicize, misrepresent, or manipulate the electoral process and to encourage citizens to engage responsibly and constructively.
In conclusion, the Northern Youth Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to promoting civic engagement, youth participation, and national development. The group hailed the Senate for demonstrating principled leadership, institutional courage, and a clear commitment to democracy, stating that such decisive actions are critical for building a stable, inclusive, and transparent Nigeria.
