The Campaign for Dignity Governance has commended the Nigerian Senate for its decisive action in reinforcing the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions through the recent passage of the Electoral Act Amendment 2026. The civic group described the Senate’s action as a timely demonstration of responsible governance and institutional courage at a critical period for the nation’s democracy.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, Razaq Olokoba, Convener of the Campaign for Dignity Governance, noted that the amendment represents a pragmatic approach to electoral reform—balancing technological innovation with Nigeria’s socio-economic realities. He highlighted that the move underscores the importance of verifiable, accountable processes in protecting the credibility of elections.
“At a time when citizens are deeply concerned about the integrity of electoral processes, the Senate has shown that democratic institutions can rise above partisan pressures and defend the collective interest of Nigerians,” Olokoba said. “This is a critical step toward ensuring that elections are conducted transparently, fairly, and responsibly.”
The group emphasized that the amendment, which strengthens safeguards around election result collation and transmission, reflects careful consideration of Nigeria’s infrastructural challenges, including uneven network coverage and regional disparities in access to technology. By prioritizing signed and countersigned result sheets as the primary source for collation, while retaining electronic transmission where feasible, the Senate has set a standard for balancing innovation with accountability.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance noted that credible elections are the backbone of participatory democracy and serve as a platform for citizens, especially young Nigerians, to actively shape the nation’s future. In particular, they highlighted the role of young people as the largest demographic in the country, stressing that transparent electoral processes are vital in building their confidence in governance.
“Young Nigerians are increasingly engaged and aware. For them, elections are not just about casting a vote; they are about ensuring that their voices are represented and their rights respected,” Olokoba explained. “Legislative action like this strengthens civic trust and encourages youth participation in national development.”
He added that the Nigerian Youth stand to benefit significantly from clearer and more credible electoral laws.
“When electoral laws are firm and realistic, young people are more likely to believe in the system, participate peacefully, and channel their energy into nation-building rather than cynicism or disengagement,” he noted.
The organization also underscored the importance of ongoing civic education, public awareness, and continuous engagement between lawmakers and citizens. They urged other government agencies, political actors, and civil society organizations to support the Senate’s initiative by fostering inclusivity and promoting accountability across all levels of government.
Furthermore, the group applauded the Senate for resisting undue pressure from partisan and special-interest actors who, according to them, sought to compromise the integrity of the reform process. By maintaining focus on national interest rather than short-term political gains, the Senate has set a precedent for responsible and principled governance.
In conclusion, the Campaign for Dignity Governance reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for transparent, accountable, and participatory democratic processes in Nigeria. The group called on all stakeholders to work collaboratively in implementing the amended Electoral Act, ensuring that future elections reflect the aspirations and will of the people.
Call for Responsible Engagement
The Youth Bureau called on political actors, civil society organisations, and citizens to engage constructively with the amended law, support its implementation, and resist misinformation capable of undermining public trust.
The group concluded that the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment 2026 represents a meaningful contribution to democratic stability and urged continued legislative courage in defending the will of the people.
