The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the effective maintenance and long-term sustainability of public housing estates across the state, describing it as a critical component of its urban development agenda.
Speaking on the government’s housing policy, the Commissioner for Housing noted that ensuring the proper upkeep of existing estates is just as important as constructing new ones. According to the Commissioner, well-maintained housing estates not only improve the quality of life of residents but also protect public investments and enhance the overall image of the state.
The Commissioner explained that the administration of Lagos State Government is adopting a structured approach to estate management that focuses on regular maintenance, efficient waste disposal, reliable water supply, and improved security. He added that emphasis is also being placed on the use of durable building materials and environmentally friendly practices that promote sustainability.
He stressed that housing sustainability goes beyond physical structures, noting that community involvement is vital to the success of maintenance efforts. Residents, he said, must take ownership of their environment by adhering to estate regulations and supporting government initiatives aimed at preserving facilities and common areas.
The Commissioner further disclosed that the government is strengthening partnerships with facility managers and private sector operators to ensure that housing estates are professionally managed. This collaboration, he said, will help reduce the burden on government while improving service delivery through innovation and accountability.
In line with the state’s development plans, the Ministry of Housing is also reviewing policies that will encourage renewable energy use, efficient drainage systems, and green spaces within estates. These measures, the Commissioner explained, are designed to create healthier living environments and reduce the long-term cost of maintenance.
He assured residents that the state government remains committed to delivering safe, functional, and affordable housing, while ensuring that existing estates are preserved for future generations. “Our focus is not only on building houses but on sustaining communities,” he said.
The Commissioner urged residents to cooperate with estate managers and report vandalism or misuse of facilities, adding that collective responsibility is key to achieving the government’s vision of sustainable housing in Lagos.
