The Lagos State Government has signalled its readiness to fully enforce the mandatory health insurance policy for all residents, in a renewed effort to expand access to quality healthcare and reduce the financial burden of medical expenses on families.
Speaking on the policy, state officials said the move is aimed at ensuring that every resident of Lagos can receive timely and affordable medical care without having to pay out-of-pocket at the point of service. The government noted that despite sustained sensitisation and stakeholder engagement, compliance with the compulsory health insurance scheme remains below expectations.
According to the government, the enforcement drive is anchored on existing laws that make health insurance compulsory for residents and employers operating within the state. Officials explained that the policy is designed to strengthen the healthcare system by pooling resources and spreading risks, thereby improving service delivery across public and private health facilities.
The administration of Lagos State Government emphasised that no resident should be denied access to healthcare because of inability to pay. It added that the insurance scheme provides coverage for a wide range of basic healthcare services, including outpatient care, maternal services, and essential treatments.
Authorities also disclosed that mechanisms are being put in place to ensure that vulnerable groups, including the poor and informal sector workers, are adequately captured under the scheme through subsidised plans and special support programmes.
The government warned that continued non-compliance may attract sanctions, especially for organisations and businesses that fail to register their employees as required by law. At the same time, it assured residents that the enforcement process would be accompanied by renewed public education to clarify benefits, registration procedures, and approved healthcare providers.
Officials urged residents to take advantage of the scheme, stressing that preventive healthcare and early treatment remain cheaper and more effective than emergency care.
With this renewed push, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient healthcare system that guarantees universal health coverage, improves health outcomes, and enhances the overall well-being of residents across the state.
