The Lagos State Government has restated its strong commitment to promoting environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastics as part of its wider strategy to protect the environment and improve public health across the state.
Speaking on the state’s environmental sustainability agenda, the government noted that the harmful impact of single-use plastics on drainage systems, waterways, and marine life has become a major concern, particularly in a coastal city like Lagos. As a result, the administration is intensifying efforts to reduce plastic waste through policy reforms, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with key stakeholders.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources explained that the state is encouraging the adoption of biodegradable and reusable packaging materials by manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. He said this transition is necessary to curb flooding caused by blocked drainage channels and to reduce the volume of waste ending up in landfills and water bodies.
According to him, the Lagos State Government is also engaging producers and distributors of plastic products to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to promote extended producer responsibility, where companies take greater responsibility for the waste generated by their products.
He added that sustained public sensitisation remains a key pillar of the policy. Residents are being encouraged to embrace responsible consumption habits by choosing reusable bags, containers, and bottles over disposable plastics. Community-based organisations and schools are also being involved in advocacy programmes aimed at instilling environmental consciousness from an early age.
The Commissioner further disclosed that enforcement mechanisms are being strengthened to support the state’s push for cleaner alternatives, while ensuring that businesses are given the necessary support to transition without undue disruption.
He emphasised that protecting the environment requires collective action, stressing that government alone cannot solve the plastic pollution challenge. “This is about safeguarding our future and the health of our people. Every resident has a role to play,” he said.
With this renewed commitment, the Lagos State Government reiterated its determination to build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable city, where economic growth is balanced with environmental responsibility and innovation.
