Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated the Board of the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund, charging members to prioritise the growth of sports from the grassroots across the state. The inauguration ceremony took place at Lagos House, Marina, where the Governor outlined a clear vision for building a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem in Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed that the future of sports in the state lies in deliberate investments at the foundational level. According to him, this includes strengthening school sports programmes, supporting community-based competitions, and upgrading existing sports facilities across all divisions. He noted that Lagos is blessed with abundant athletic talent, but emphasised that talent alone is not enough without proper infrastructure and consistent funding.
“Lagos has never lacked potential,” the Governor said, adding that it is the duty of government and stakeholders to create an environment where young athletes can thrive and compete at the highest levels. He described the establishment of the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund as a strategic step towards providing structured and reliable support for sports development in the state.
The newly inaugurated Board is chaired by Enitan Oshodi, with Olaposi Agunbiade appointed as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer. Other members include Olabode Agoro, Adeniyi Adedokun Adekoya, Gbolahan Onibuje, Jubril Gawat, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Olayemi Sarumi, Lekan Fatodu, Moshood Ajide, Engr. Ibrahim Adigun, representatives of Local Government and LCDA chairmen, as well as the Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission.
Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the Board to leverage their professional experience and networks to attract private sector participation and partnerships. He noted that strong institutions and private sector support are essential to sustaining sports development over the long term.
With this initiative, the Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a solid foundation for sports in Lagos, ensuring that young talents are discovered early, properly nurtured, and provided with opportunities to excel both nationally and internationally.
