The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a 13 per cent increase in fares across all services operating under the Bus Reform Initiative, including the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and standard bus routes across the state.
The fare adjustment affects both the high-capacity BRT corridors and conventional regulated bus services running on major routes within the metropolis. The decision, according to government officials, follows a review of current operational realities and rising costs faced by transport operators, particularly in areas such as fuel, vehicle maintenance, and spare parts.
Authorities explained that the increment is aimed at sustaining public transportation services and ensuring the continued availability of buses for millions of commuters who rely on them daily. The government maintained that the new fares remain comparatively lower than prices charged by unregulated commercial transport services, while still offering commuters improved safety, reliability, and structured operations.
The Bus Reform Initiative was introduced to provide an affordable, efficient, and organized mass transit system for residents, with the BRT serving as its flagship component. Over the years, the programme has expanded to cover multiple routes, easing traffic congestion and reducing travel time for workers, students, and traders across key parts of the state.
Reacting to the development, some commuters expressed concern over the impact of the increase on their daily transport expenses, especially amid prevailing economic pressures. However, transport authorities reassured the public that measures are in place to maintain service quality, minimize disruptions, and prevent arbitrary fare hikes by operators.
The Lagos State Government also urged residents to continue using regulated bus services, noting that they provide better value through fixed pricing, professional drivers, and safer travel conditions. Officials added that the fare review would be monitored closely to ensure compliance and to protect commuters from exploitation.
The new fare structure is expected to take effect immediately, as transport operators under the Bus Reform Initiative begin implementation across all approved routes statewide.
