The Northern Youth Assembly has commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for reinforcing youth development and talent discovery through the inauguration of the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund Board, describing the move as a strategic investment in the future of young people across the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu formally inaugurated the Board at Lagos House, Marina, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem driven by grassroots participation and structured institutional support. The initiative is aimed at strengthening sports development from the foundational level while creating opportunities for young athletes to grow into professional competitors capable of representing Lagos and Nigeria globally.
Speaking during the inauguration, the governor emphasised that meaningful sports development must begin at the grassroots, particularly through schools and community-based programmes. He noted that Lagos possesses immense athletic talent across its communities but stressed that talent alone cannot thrive without adequate infrastructure, organisation, and consistent funding.
According to him, the establishment of the Lagos State Sports Trust Fund represents a deliberate policy decision to ensure long-term financing and private sector participation in sports development. The initiative is expected to support school sports competitions, community tournaments, talent identification programmes, and the rehabilitation and upgrading of sports facilities across all divisions of the state.
“Lagos has never lacked potential,” the governor stated, adding that government must create enabling structures that allow young athletes to develop their abilities in safe, modern, and competitive environments. He explained that sports development goes beyond recreation, serving as a tool for youth empowerment, social inclusion, and economic opportunity.
The newly inaugurated Board is chaired by Enitan Oshodi, with Olaposi Agunbiade serving as Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer. Other members include professionals drawn from sports administration, governance, and community leadership, reflecting the administration’s intention to combine expertise with accountability in driving the initiative forward.
Governor Sanwo-Olu charged members of the Board to utilise their experience and networks to attract partnerships from the private sector, noting that collaboration between government and investors is essential to sustaining sports programmes over the long term. He added that structured investment in sports can create employment opportunities within coaching, facility management, sports marketing, and related industries.
Reacting to the development, President of the Northern Youth Assembly, Awakulu Mogaji, described the inauguration as a forward-looking intervention that will positively impact young people across communities.
“This initiative shows that Governor Sanwo-Olu understands the importance of sports as a pathway for youth development and social progress. When young people are given opportunities through sports, they gain discipline, confidence, and economic prospects,” Mogaji said.
He further noted that grassroots sports programmes help reduce youth unemployment and social vices by providing constructive engagement and clear career pathways for talented individuals.
Observers have noted that the Sports Trust Fund aligns with the broader vision of the Sanwo-Olu administration to invest in human capital development alongside infrastructure growth. By institutionalising funding and governance structures for sports, Lagos aims to nurture talent from discovery to professional excellence.
With the inauguration of the Board, stakeholders believe Lagos is taking a decisive step toward building a thriving sports culture capable of producing national champions and international athletes while strengthening community unity and youth engagement.
The initiative reinforces the administration’s broader goal of ensuring that every young Lagosian, regardless of background, has access to opportunities that enable them to realise their full potential through sports and structured development programmes.
