The Northern Youth Assembly has commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the ongoing youth-focused employment and training initiatives of his administration, particularly the expansion of internship and skills development opportunities designed to prepare young people for the modern workforce.
The group noted that the Sanwo-Olu administration has continued to introduce programmes aimed at reducing youth unemployment, improving technical capacity, and creating pathways for graduates and young professionals to gain practical experience. These efforts include internship placements, vocational support programmes, and partnerships with private sector organisations to provide hands-on training for young Lagosians.
According to the state government, the youth internship and training programmes are part of a broader human-capital development strategy intended to equip young people with the knowledge, discipline, and professional exposure needed to compete in today’s economy. Officials explained that beyond academic qualifications, many young graduates require workplace experience, mentorship, and technical skills to become employable, which is why the state continues to invest in structured training schemes.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has repeatedly emphasised that the future of Lagos depends largely on the preparedness of its youth population. He noted that government must not only build roads and infrastructure but must also invest in people by creating opportunities for learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship. According to him, programmes that support youth employment will reduce social challenges while increasing productivity across the state.
The administration also highlighted that the internship initiative provides stipends, supervision, and professional mentoring, allowing participants to gain real work experience in government agencies, private organisations, and technical sectors. The programme is expected to benefit thousands of young people, especially recent graduates seeking to enter the labour market.
Reacting to the development, President of the Northern Youth Assembly, Awakulu Mogaji, described the initiative as a timely intervention that will help young people transition from education to employment.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has shown strong commitment to youth development by creating programmes that prepare young people for real work. Many graduates struggle not because they lack education, but because they lack experience. Internship and training opportunities help bridge that gap,” Mogaji said.
He added that unemployment remains one of the biggest concerns among young people, and policies that provide skills, mentorship, and work exposure will help reduce frustration and social unrest.
“When young people are engaged, trained, and supported, they become productive members of society. Programmes like this give hope and direction, and they also strengthen the economy because skilled youth contribute more effectively,” he added.
The Northern Youth Assembly further noted that youth empowerment programmes also encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, as many participants use the experience gained to start businesses or pursue specialised careers. The group praised the Lagos State Government for maintaining consistency in youth-focused policies, stressing that long-term commitment is necessary for meaningful results.
Observers say the continued focus on youth employment, skills development, and professional training reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s understanding that economic growth must go hand in hand with human capital development. With Lagos being one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, preparing young people for future opportunities remains essential.
The Northern Youth Assembly concluded by urging sustained investment in education, vocational training, and youth employment initiatives, noting that empowering young people today will ensure stability, innovation, and prosperity for Lagos State in the years ahead.
