The The Youth Bureau has commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining the expansion of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project, particularly the ongoing development and operational strengthening of the Lagos Blue Line Rail, describing the initiative as one of the most impactful infrastructure programmes currently transforming transportation and economic productivity in the state.
The group stated that the continued investment in modern rail transportation reflects long-term planning by the Sanwo-Olu administration to address traffic congestion, improve worker mobility, and position Lagos as a competitive megacity capable of supporting business growth and population expansion.
Over the past months, the Lagos State Government has intensified work on the rail system while improving passenger operations on completed sections of the Blue Line, which runs from Marina through Mile 2 and is expected to extend further along the Lagos-Badagry corridor when fully completed. The rail project forms a key part of the state’s integrated transport master plan aimed at reducing dependence on road travel and creating faster, safer, and more reliable movement across the metropolis.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has repeatedly explained that modern rail infrastructure is essential for the future of Lagos, noting that economic productivity suffers when commuters spend long hours in traffic. According to the governor, the rail system will not only ease congestion but will also support commerce, tourism, and industrial development along major corridors of the state.
He stressed that the project is designed to serve millions of residents daily, while also creating employment opportunities in engineering, operations, maintenance, and transport services. The administration has also continued to improve supporting infrastructure around the rail stations, including road rehabilitation, pedestrian access, and security presence to ensure safe and efficient usage.
Reacting to the development, Publicity Secretary of The Youth Bureau, Adekunle Adeosun, described the rail expansion as a bold and necessary step toward building a modern Lagos that works for young people, workers, and businesses alike.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu deserves commendation for staying committed to the rail project despite the complexity and cost involved. Projects like the Blue Line show that the government is thinking about the future of Lagos and the daily struggles of residents who need reliable transportation,” Adeosun said.
He noted that young people are among the biggest beneficiaries of improved transportation, as easier mobility increases access to education, employment, and business opportunities across different parts of the state.
“When transportation improves, productivity improves. Students get to school on time, workers spend less on transport, and businesses can operate more efficiently. This is why infrastructure projects like the rail system have direct impact on the lives of ordinary people,” he added.
The Youth Bureau further stated that the rail project will encourage investment along the Lagos-Badagry axis and other developing areas, creating new commercial hubs and expanding economic activities beyond the traditional city centre. The group also praised the administration for maintaining consistency on large-scale projects, noting that continuity in governance is necessary for sustainable development.
Observers believe that the steady progress on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit programme confirms the state government’s commitment to long-term infrastructure that will benefit future generations. With population growth placing increasing pressure on existing roads, the expansion of rail transportation is widely seen as one of the most important solutions to urban mobility challenges.
The Youth Bureau concluded by urging continued support for policies that promote modern infrastructure, youth employment, and economic development, noting that projects such as the Blue Line rail demonstrate that Lagos is moving steadily toward becoming a truly global city.
