The Campaign for Dignity Governance has commended Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for reaffirming his administration’s commitment to consumer protection and market confidence, following key announcements made during the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day in Lagos.
At the event, held under the theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” Governor Sanwo‑Olu pledged stronger enforcement of consumer protection standards and expanded oversight of goods and services available to Lagos residents. The governor emphasised that consumer rights are fundamental to a fair marketplace and that citizens should be able to purchase products and services without fear of exploitation, fraud, or safety hazards. **
Reacting to the governor’s renewal of commitment to consumer rights protection, Razaq Olokoba, Convener of the Campaign for Dignity Governance, applauded the initiative as a positive step toward economic fairness and youth empowerment.
“When consumers are confident that the products and services they buy meet safety and quality standards, business improves and trust in the economy grows,” Olokoba said.
“Governor Sanwo‑Olu’s commitment to robust consumer protection is a welcome development that promises to level the playing field for young entrepreneurs, students, and everyday citizens who rely on fair market practices.”
Olokoba added that consumer protection is especially important in sectors such as digital services, food and pharmaceuticals, and household goods — where unsafe or fraudulent products can do significant harm.
“Protecting consumers is about protecting people’s livelihoods and wellbeing. Youths trying to build businesses deserve a marketplace where honesty and quality are rewarded, not punished,” he stated.
Why This Matters to Lagosians, Especially Youth
✔ Enhanced consumer protection builds trust in the marketplace
✔ Young entrepreneurs benefit from fair competition and transparent business practices
✔ Product safety and quality oversight improve public health and wellbeing
✔ Efficient complaint resolution systems help citizens seek redress without fear
✔ Stronger consumer rights attract investment and promote economic stability
The Campaign for Dignity Governance also emphasised that involving youth organisations, community advocacy groups, and business associations in consumer protection initiatives will help educate the public, increase compliance, and ensure that policies are enforced effectively at the grassroots level.
By supporting consumer rights, the Sanwo‑Olu administration is reinforcing Lagos State’s position as a leading economic hub that is not only business‑friendly but also people‑centred, fair, and responsive to citizens’ needs.
To sustain the momentum from World Consumer Rights Day, civic groups and regulatory agencies are expected to carry out public awareness campaigns, community outreach, and stakeholder engagements aimed at educating residents on:
- Their rights as consumers
- How to report unfair or unsafe business practices
- Where to seek help when rights are violated
- How to participate in advocacy for stronger market regulations
These efforts will be essential in creating a marketplace where consumers and businesses alike operate with confidence and mutual accountability.
