The Lagos State Government has commenced its 2026 promotion exercise for over 5,000 public servants, marking a significant step toward strengthening the efficiency and professionalism of the state’s civil service. The exercise, which began on Tuesday, is expected to cover approximately 5,258 officers across various ministries, departments, and agencies.
According to officials, the promotion process will involve officers from Grade Levels 01 to 16, ensuring that a broad spectrum of the workforce is evaluated. The initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to rewarding diligence, competence, and dedication to duty within the public sector.
Speaking on the development, the government of Lagos emphasized that the promotion exercise will not rely solely on years of service but will incorporate a more rigorous and merit-based assessment system. This includes written examinations and computer-based tests (CBT), particularly for senior officers. The introduction of these evaluation methods is aimed at enhancing transparency and ensuring that only qualified and capable personnel are elevated.
The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that the reform is part of broader efforts to modernize the civil service and align it with global best practices. By prioritizing merit, the government seeks to build a more responsive and results-driven workforce capable of meeting the growing demands of a rapidly expanding state.
Civil servants participating in the exercise have been encouraged to prepare adequately and demonstrate professionalism throughout the process. The government also reassured workers of its commitment to their welfare, noting that timely promotions and career progression remain key components of its human resource policy.
Overall, the promotion exercise is expected to boost morale within the civil service while reinforcing accountability and improved service delivery to residents of Lagos.
