Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to support the growth and global competitiveness of Africa’s gaming industry, describing the sector as a rapidly expanding frontier with significant economic potential.
Speaking at the 2026 African Gaming Expo held in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu noted that the gaming industry across the continent is undergoing a major transformation. According to him, what was once largely informal is now evolving into a structured and regulated ecosystem capable of contributing meaningfully to economic development. He emphasized that with the right policies, investment, and technological integration, the sector could become a major driver of employment, innovation, and revenue generation.
The governor highlighted Lagos’ strategic position as a leading commercial and technology hub in Africa, stating that the state is well-placed to harness opportunities within the gaming and digital entertainment space. He pointed out that the government is focused on creating an enabling environment that encourages responsible gaming, attracts investors, and supports startups and innovators within the industry.
Sanwo-Olu further explained that the growth of the gaming sector aligns with Lagos’ broader vision of building a diversified economy powered by technology and creativity. He stressed that young people, who form a large percentage of the population, stand to benefit immensely from opportunities in game development, digital design, software engineering, and related fields.
In addition, the governor underscored the importance of regulation in ensuring sustainability and public trust. He noted that effective oversight would help curb illegal activities, promote fair practices, and ensure that the industry contributes positively to society. He also called for collaboration between government agencies, private investors, and international partners to unlock the full potential of the sector.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including industry players, policymakers, and technology experts, to discuss trends, challenges, and opportunities within Africa’s gaming landscape. Participants explored ways to strengthen the regulatory framework, expand market access, and leverage innovation to compete on a global scale.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by reiterating Lagos State’s readiness to lead the charge in positioning Africa as a major player in the global gaming industry. He expressed confidence that with sustained effort and strategic partnerships, the sector would continue to grow and deliver long-term economic benefits for the state and the continent at large.
