Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for mutual respect and cooperation between government enforcement officers and the general public to ensure orderly urban development in the state.
Speaking at the 2025 Stakeholders’ Engagement on Physical Planning, themed “Planning Permit: The Rebirth”, the Governor emphasized that any form of harassment or assault on officials performing their lawful duties undermines progress and stability.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Sam Egube, highlighted that physical planning officers are tasked with statutory responsibilities in accordance with established laws and regulations, and should be treated with respect and courtesy.
“Residents are warned against verbal or physical attacks on officials. Aggrieved individuals should use appropriate government channels to lodge complaints,” he stated.
“Civility, dialogue, and adherence to due process are the hallmarks of a functional society that seeks sustainable development.”
Also present at the event were the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Rilwan Akiolu, and other key stakeholders in the built environment, who echoed the call for better collaboration and understanding between the public and regulatory authorities.
The Governor reiterated that the role of enforcement officers is crucial in implementing the state’s Urban and Regional Planning Laws, which regulate development, prevent building collapse, and guide infrastructural growth in the fast-growing megacity.
The event brought together key stakeholders from the construction, architecture, urban planning, and real estate sectors, as well as traditional leaders like the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwan Akiolu, who also advocated for dialogue and accountability in physical development matters.
Oba Akiolu emphasized that while government officials must uphold professionalism, residents also have a responsibility to act within the law and respect those working for the public good.
The engagement session aimed to rebuild trust between the government and the public, improve awareness of planning regulations, and reinforce the importance of obtaining valid planning permits before commencing construction projects.
