Lagos State continues to make significant strides in environmental sustainability, as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed Ismachiah Oduwole, a passionate young Nigerian climate advocate, who brought the symbolic Climate Ball to Lagos as part of a global awareness campaign.
Ismachiah Oduwole, known for his inspiring work in climate advocacy, has been travelling the world with the Climate Ball — a symbol of unity and action against climate change — gathering signatures from global leaders and changemakers. His mission aims to inspire collective responsibility toward a sustainable planet. Lagos is the first city in Nigeria to host this symbolic signing, marking a powerful moment in the state’s growing environmental leadership.
Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded Ismachiah’s vision and commitment, noting that young voices are critical in driving innovative climate solutions. “Welcoming Ismachiah and the Climate Ball to Lagos is more than ceremonial — it is a reaffirmation of our government’s commitment to climate action, environmental protection, and the empowerment of young leaders,” the Governor said.
The visit comes at a time when Lagos has been independently recognised for its substantial efforts in building climate resilience and advancing a circular economy. Following months of rigorous evaluation by environmental experts, Lagos was highlighted for its policies focused on waste reduction, green infrastructure, and sustainability-led development.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated the state’s dedication to aligning with global climate goals while addressing local environmental challenges. He emphasized that sustainable development remains at the heart of Lagos’ agenda, pointing to recent initiatives such as green transportation, clean energy programs, waste-to-wealth schemes, and tree planting campaigns across the state.
The Climate Ball signing ceremony in Lagos symbolizes more than a formal commitment — it represents a call to action for every Lagosian to contribute to protecting the environment. It also highlights the importance of intergenerational collaboration, with youth playing a central role in shaping the future of climate policy and innovation.
“As we sign the Climate Ball, we are reminded of our duty to protect our environment — not just for today, but for generations yet unborn. Together, we can build a greener, healthier, and more resilient Lagos,” Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded.
