Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of every worker in the state. Speaking at the 3rd Lagos State Occupational Safety and Health Conference held today, the Governor emphasized that no individual should leave home for work only to suffer injury or worse due to unsafe working conditions.
Addressing a wide array of stakeholders from various sectors including construction, manufacturing, hospitality, and education, Governor Sanwo-Olu outlined the progress the state has made through the Lagos State Safety Commission. He noted that the implementation of enhanced safety protocols has led to a significant reduction in workplace accidents, alongside improved safety standards and greater accountability.
“Our guiding principle is simple,” the Governor stated. “Every Lagosian deserves the right to work with dignity, in an environment that protects their health and well-being. Safety is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right.”
In line with this vision, the Governor launched two major initiatives during the conference: the Safety First Campaign and the Occupational Safety Cadre. The Safety First Campaign is aimed at raising public awareness around workplace hazards and promoting proactive risk prevention, while the Occupational Safety Cadre seeks to professionalize safety management within the public sector, establishing it as a viable and respected career path.
“These initiatives reflect our belief that safety should never be treated as an afterthought,” Sanwo-Olu said. “It must be a priority embedded in our culture and systems—from policy to practice.”
The Governor commended the efforts of the Lagos State Safety Commission for its role in enforcing compliance and building a safety-conscious workforce across the state. He also called on all stakeholders—employers, employees, regulators, and community leaders—to take collective ownership of workplace safety.
“A safer Lagos is not just a policy goal,” Sanwo-Olu concluded. “It is a shared responsibility and a promise we intend to keep.”
The conference served as a platform for collaboration among industry experts, government officials, and safety professionals, reinforcing Lagos State’s leadership role in promoting occupational health and safety in Nigeria.
