Lagos State played host today to esteemed traditional rulers from across the country as the National Executive Council of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) held its meeting in the state. The gathering brought together royal fathers from various regions, reaffirming the central role traditional institutions continue to play in Nigeria’s unity, cultural preservation, and grassroots development.
Speaking during the meeting, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed his deep appreciation for the commitment of traditional rulers in safeguarding the peace and identity of their respective communities. He noted that these leaders remain the closest to the people, acting as custodians of culture, arbiters in times of conflict, and steady anchors of tradition in an ever-changing society.
“Our royal fathers are connected to the heartbeat of our communities,” the governor said. “They are vital partners in our pursuit of peace, progress, and nation-building. Their presence here today demonstrates our shared commitment to strengthening the bonds that hold our diverse country together.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also emphasized the need to formally recognize the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance structure. He advocated for a constitutional review that would assign traditional institutions more defined and active roles in conflict resolution, community development, and public engagement at the grassroots level.
“We must continue to find ways to integrate their influence and wisdom into our governance frameworks,” he stated. “Their ability to mediate, guide, and inspire their people is a national asset that should not be overlooked.”
The meeting provided an opportunity for open dialogue on key national issues, particularly around unity, security, and development. Discussions also touched on how to preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage in a time of modernization and social change.
As the meeting concluded, the governor reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to working closely with traditional institutions to build a more inclusive, just, and peaceful Nigeria. He called on all Nigerians to continue supporting efforts that promote dialogue, unity, and respect for the country’s cultural diversity.
Together with our royal fathers, we can continue laying strong foundations for a nation where peace, justice, and progress are not just ideals, but realities for all citizens
