Earlier today, I returned to my roots in Lagos Island East — a community that played a defining role in shaping my identity and values. My visit was to commission a series of major projects completed by the Executive Chairman, Hon. Muibi Folawiyo, as part of the activities marking his first 100 days in office. The occasion was both personal and symbolic, representing progress, continuity, and a renewed commitment to community development.
Among the projects commissioned was a new housing estate, designed to provide decent, accessible accommodation for residents and help address the growing demand for quality housing within the area. The estate stands as a testament to the administration’s dedication to improving the living standards of the people and ensuring that families can build their futures in a safe and supportive environment.
We also inaugurated a state-of-the-art Command Center for the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC). This facility is positioned to enhance community policing, support rapid response operations, and strengthen grassroots security across Lagos Island East. By equipping the LNSC with better infrastructure and technology, the local government is investing in a safer, more coordinated security framework that prioritizes the wellbeing of every resident.
A key highlight of the day was the unveiling of the newly rebuilt and upgraded Lagos Island East Council Secretariat. The impressive complex now features more than 60 modern offices, a purpose-built legislative building, spacious 300- and 500-seater halls, as well as dedicated spaces for spiritual and social needs, including a mosque and a church. In addition, the Secretariat houses a staff clinic, pharmacy, supermarket, and a multi-agency operations complex, bringing essential services closer to the community while creating an efficient hub for governance and public service delivery.
For me, witnessing these developments in my home community is deeply meaningful. Lagos Island East has always embodied resilience, enterprise, and communal spirit. Today’s achievements reaffirm our shared belief that progress is most powerful when it begins at the grassroots, where people live, work, and raise their families.
Together, we are building a neighbourhood that honours our history while embracing the promise of the future — a community that reflects our pride, our values, and our collective vision for sustainable development. These projects are more than infrastructure; they represent hope, opportunity, and the continued transformation of Lagos Island East into a model of inclusive growth and community-driven progress.
