I was honoured to attend the 40th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Awards Night of the Nigerian Law School Class of 1985, a memorable occasion that celebrated four decades of service, achievement, and shared history. Forty years after being called to the Bar, this distinguished class stands as a powerful testament to the enduring impact of legal education, discipline, and commitment to national service.
Over the years, members of the Class of 1985 have distinguished themselves across diverse areas of public and private life. From the Bench to the Bar, academia to public service, and across various professional fields, they have produced judges, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, public servants, scholars, and professionals who have contributed quietly but consistently to the development of our legal system and the progress of our country. Their careers reflect not only personal excellence, but also a deep sense of responsibility to society.
Beyond individual accomplishments, what stood out most during the celebration was the enduring bond among classmates. There was a clear sense of unity, mutual respect, and shared pride in the values instilled at the Nigerian Law School—integrity, discipline, diligence, and service. These values have evidently guided their professional journeys and sustained their relationships over four decades.
The decision of the Class of 1985 to mark this milestone with purpose, reflection, and gratitude is commendable. By recognising excellence among their peers and celebrating collective achievement, they have set an example for younger generations of legal practitioners. Their story reminds us that true success is measured not only by titles or positions, but by lasting impact, shared values, and the strength of the bonds we build along the way.
