The Lagos State Governor has visited the site of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building that was destroyed by a fire incident on December 24, expressing deep sympathy with the families of victims and all residents and business owners affected by the tragedy. He described the incident as heartbreaking, noting that no words can adequately comfort those who lost loved ones or livelihoods.
Providing an official update, the Governor confirmed that eight deaths have been recorded so far. Five of the victims have been identified, while three remain unidentified. He also disclosed that thirteen people have been successfully rescued from the site since the incident.
To support victims’ families and members of the public seeking updates, an information and assistance center has been established at the location. Officers from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LASAMBUS), and other responding agencies are on ground to provide verified information and necessary support.
The Governor stressed that the affected area remains highly unsafe and has been completely secured. He warned that no business, trading, or unauthorized activity should take place at the site, adding that the market remains closed. Only first responders are permitted access as emergency teams continue a careful and methodical search of the rubble, especially at the rear section of the building, to ensure that no one remains trapped.
He noted that preliminary findings point to dangerous practices in the area, including the unsafe use of generators and the construction of shops around power transformers, which significantly heightened the risk of fire.
Following a comprehensive structural assessment, the Governor announced that the GNI building will be demolished using the safest possible methods. He added that some surrounding structures would also need to be removed to prevent further danger.
While acknowledging the difficulty of these decisions, he emphasized that the protection of human lives must remain the highest priority. He reaffirmed his commitment to overseeing the recovery process and ensuring that affected families receive appropriate support.
