Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to transforming the education sector, describing it as a cornerstone of the state’s development agenda. The governor made this known during a meeting with the leadership of Westerfield College, United Kingdom, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Michael Dosunmu, at Lagos House, Marina.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said the engagement provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on the future of education in Lagos and explore areas of collaboration that would expand global exposure and opportunities for students in the state. According to him, education remains more than a policy objective for his administration, as it forms a major pillar of the THEMES+ agenda and the foundation for sustainable growth and development.
He emphasized his belief that every child in Lagos State deserves access to quality education, stressing that no child should be left behind or denied a place in the classroom. The governor disclosed that in the coming months, the state government will commission 36 new schools in Tolu, Ajegunle, as part of efforts to address infrastructure gaps and ensure that every child has access to a conducive learning environment, complete with proper seating and facilities.
Reflecting on progress made so far, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos State had only one state-owned university when his administration assumed office. Today, the number has increased to three, alongside the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Tertiary Education to provide focused oversight and support for colleges and universities across the state.
While acknowledging that significant work still lies ahead, the governor expressed confidence that deliberate investments in education are laying a solid foundation for future generations. He said the administration is committed to building a clear pathway—“a ladder,” as he described it—that young people in Lagos can climb to achieve their full potential and compete globally.
