Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to run joint degree programmes in Nigeria. He described the partnership as a significant milestone in strengthening higher education, global collaboration, and human capital development in the country.
The MoU, signed by both institutions, is aimed at delivering internationally recognised degree programmes in Nigeria, giving students access to global academic standards without the need to study abroad. The initiative is expected to enhance knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and capacity building between the two universities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu welcomed the development, noting that Lagos, as Nigeria’s education and innovation hub, remains committed to supporting initiatives that expand access to quality education and prepare young people for global competitiveness. He said partnerships of this nature align with the state government’s vision of positioning Lagos as a centre of excellence for learning, research, and innovation in Africa.
According to the Governor, enabling Nigerian students to earn globally competitive degrees locally will help reduce the cost burden on families, curb brain drain, and strengthen the nation’s talent pipeline. He added that exposure to international curricula and teaching methodologies will better equip graduates with skills relevant to today’s evolving global economy.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos described the MoU as a strategic step towards deepening UNILAG’s international footprint and enhancing its academic offerings. He noted that the partnership with the University of Birmingham, a globally respected institution, would raise standards and open new opportunities for students and faculty members.
Representatives of the University of Birmingham also expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global engagement.
The MoU covers joint degree delivery, academic exchanges, research collaboration, and capacity development. It marks an important step in internationalising higher education in Nigeria while reinforcing Lagos State’s role as a leading destination for academic and intellectual growth.
