The Lagos State Government has commenced the Carter Railway Drainage Project, a major stormwater management initiative aimed at addressing the persistent flooding challenges in Ebute Metta and surrounding communities.
The project is designed to provide a long-term solution to seasonal flooding that has affected residents, businesses, and commuters in the area for years. By improving the flow and discharge of stormwater, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce flood-related disruptions, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
According to the state government, the drainage channel will be constructed to convey surface runoff through the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) corridor. The channel will direct excess stormwater safely toward the Iponri confluence along Western Avenue, ensuring efficient discharge into the appropriate waterway. This design is intended to prevent the accumulation of water within residential and commercial areas of Ebute Metta.
Officials explained that the project aligns with the state’s broader flood control and climate resilience strategy, which focuses on upgrading drainage infrastructure and mitigating the impact of extreme weather conditions. The Carter Railway Drainage Project will also complement existing drainage systems in the area, enhancing overall stormwater management capacity.
Residents and business owners in Ebute Metta have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the project will bring lasting relief from recurring flooding that often damages property, disrupts daily activities, and poses health risks.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable urban development and infrastructure renewal, emphasizing that proactive drainage interventions
