The Grassroots Democratic Initiatives (GDI) has formally congratulated the leadership of the 10th National Assembly for its proactive and decisive approach in addressing critical provisions of the revised Electoral Act. In a press release signed by Akeem Salami Sepe, National Secretary of the GDI, following an emergency national leadership meeting held in Lagos last week, the organization emphasized its confidence in the legislative leadership to maintain integrity, transparency, and principled decision-making in the implementation of the amended law.
The GDI noted that the revision of the Electoral Act is a timely measure that strengthens Nigeria’s democratic process and reinforces the principle of “one man, one vote, one value.” According to the organization, addressing gaps in the previous legislation ensures that elections across the country are conducted fairly, transparently, and credibly, reducing the likelihood of disputes and reinforcing citizen confidence in the nation’s democratic institutions.
“We commend the 10th National Assembly for its decisive action in resolving the minor lacunae in the Electoral Act. This amendment is a major step toward safeguarding the integrity of our electoral system and enhancing the culture of democratic participation across Nigeria,” said Akeem Salami Sepe. “We are confident that this legislature will remain principled and committed to upholding the trust of the people in this critical aspect of governance.”
Beyond electoral reforms, the GDI also reiterated its appreciation for the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration in Lagos State, highlighting the impactful multiplier effect of the government’s progressive policies across multiple sectors. The organization emphasized that under Governor Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State has witnessed significant strides in education, security, transportation, environmental management, and healthcare delivery.
“The Sanwo-Olu administration continues to set the standard for effective governance. Its policies are not only transforming the state infrastructure but are directly improving the quality of life for residents, from urban centres to grassroots communities,” Sepe said. “The commitment to education ensures children have access to modern learning environments, while enhanced security, transportation networks, and healthcare services demonstrate a government that listens to and acts for its people.”
The GDI also commended the administration’s initiatives to improve environmental management and public health, noting that sustainable policies in these areas are critical for long-term societal growth and wellbeing. The organization observed that the cumulative impact of these interventions has been both tangible and far-reaching, improving public trust and strengthening social cohesion across Lagos State.
Furthermore, the GDI pledged its readiness to collaborate and support the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal administration in achieving its democratic and developmental objectives. The group emphasized that constructive engagement between civic organizations, state leadership, and the federal government is essential for sustaining democratic values, promoting socio-economic development, and ensuring that governance remains responsive to the people.
“We remain committed to working hand in hand with both state and federal leadership to advance democracy, empower citizens, and implement policies that deliver real benefits to communities,” Sepe concluded.
In summary, the Grassroots Democratic Initiatives reaffirmed its confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions and leadership at both state and national levels, calling on all stakeholders to continue supporting reforms that enhance electoral integrity, strengthen governance, and foster the development of a truly participatory and accountable democracy.
