Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday received Dr. John Nwabueze, the Tax Ombudsman, at Lagos House, Marina, as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in tax administration across the state.
During the meeting, the Governor and the Tax Ombudsman discussed the strategic role of the Ombudsman’s office in promoting fairness, improving communication with taxpayers, and resolving complaints arising from tax processes. Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that an effective and independent ombudsman system is essential to building public confidence in taxation and ensuring that citizens clearly understand their rights and obligations.
He described Dr. Nwabueze’s appointment as timely, given the growing need to simplify tax procedures and address concerns from individuals and businesses. According to the Governor, clarity in tax policies and openness in administration are key pillars in sustaining trust between government and the people, particularly in a dynamic economy such as Lagos.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Dr. Nwabueze for his experience and commitment to transparency, saying these qualities will be vital in advancing reforms that place citizens at the centre of tax administration. He added that Lagos State remains committed to creating a tax environment that is fair, predictable, and supportive of economic growth, while ensuring that revenues are collected responsibly for public development.
The Governor further stressed that taxpayers must feel protected and heard, especially when disputes or misunderstandings arise. He explained that the presence of a Tax Ombudsman provides an important channel for mediation and guidance, helping to prevent conflicts and promote voluntary compliance.
Dr. Nwabueze, in his remarks, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and pledged to work closely with relevant institutions to ensure that taxpayers receive clear information and fair treatment. He assured the Governor that his office would focus on transparency, accessibility, and professionalism in handling tax-related complaints.
Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded by expressing confidence in the Ombudsman’s capacity to contribute to a more accountable and citizen-focused tax system. He said Lagos looks forward to the positive impact of the office in strengthening trust, enhancing service delivery, and promoting a culture of responsibility and cooperation in taxation across the state.
