
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday received Suzuki Hideo, Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria, on a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Marina, where both leaders held talks on strengthening bilateral cooperation between Lagos State and Japan.
The meeting focused on expanding collaboration in key sectors such as investment, technology, and infrastructure, which the Governor described as critical to Lagos’ long-term development agenda. Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that Japan’s global reputation for innovation, efficiency, and quality makes it a valuable partner in the state’s quest to build a modern, resilient, and competitive economy.
According to the Governor, Lagos is positioning itself as a leading destination for foreign direct investment in Africa, driven by its large market, skilled workforce, and improving business environment. He expressed confidence that deeper engagement with Japanese institutions and companies would open new opportunities for industrial growth, job creation, and technology transfer.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of infrastructure development in supporting economic expansion. Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that Lagos is investing heavily in transport systems, energy solutions, and urban development projects to improve mobility and quality of life for residents. He said partnerships with Japan could bring advanced technical expertise and financing models that would help accelerate these efforts.
Ambassador Suzuki Hideo commended Lagos for its strategic role as Nigeria’s commercial hub and reaffirmed Japan’s interest in strengthening ties with the state. He emphasized that Japanese businesses are keen to explore opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing, digital technology, renewable energy, and transportation, where their experience could add value.
Both parties agreed on the need to sustain dialogue and explore practical avenues for cooperation that would benefit citizens and investors alike. Governor Sanwo-Olu assured the Ambassador that Lagos remains open to partnerships that promote innovation, inclusive growth, and sustainable development.
The Governor concluded by expressing optimism that the engagement would translate into concrete projects and long-term collaboration, noting that stronger Lagos–Japan relations would contribute to economic diversification and reinforce Lagos’ position as a global city.
