The Campaign for Dignity Governance has commended Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his renewed pledge to strengthen consumer protection frameworks in Lagos State, saying this commitment will protect residents, support youth entrepreneurs, and foster a more confident and stable marketplace.
Speaking at the World Consumer Rights Day celebration organised by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, Governor Sanwo‑Olu reiterated his administration’s resolve to defend the rights of consumers by reinforcing legal and institutional structures that ensure safe products and services for all. Themed “Safe Products, Confident Consumers,” the event brought together industry leaders, civic advocates, business owners, and community stakeholders to highlight shared goals around fairness, safety, and accountability in the marketplace.
During his address, the governor stressed that strong consumer protection is not just a regulatory matter — it is a core component of economic growth, youth empowerment, and public trust. He emphasised that when consumers can buy goods and services with confidence, it creates a ripple effect of benefits that touch every part of the economy, from small businesses and informal traders to formal enterprises and multinational investors.
“Our people must be assured that what they purchase is safe, fairly priced, and in line with quality standards,” Sanwo‑Olu said. “We are committed to strengthening the legal framework and enforcement mechanisms that protect consumers, especially young entrepreneurs and small‑scale traders who form the backbone of our economy.”
The governor added that improved consumer protection builds a culture of accountability and market integrity, which helps local startups and youth‑owned businesses thrive by ensuring that unfair competition and hazardous products do not undermine honest enterprises.
Reacting to the announcement, Convener of the Campaign for Dignity Governance, Razaq Olokoba, praised the governor’s emphasis on regulatory reform and community wellbeing:
“When markets are fair, transparent, and safe, consumers, especially young people, can participate confidently in the economy. Governor Sanwo‑Olu’s renewed focus on consumer protection shows leadership that values both business growth and citizen safety,” Olokoba said.
He noted that consumer protection is often overlooked in broader economic discussions, but is pivotal to everyday life — from the food a family buys, to the electronics a young entrepreneur uses in business, to the safety of school supplies and household products.
“This policy direction empowers citizens, protects livelihoods, and encourages ethical business practices,” Olokoba added. “It also sends a strong message to the private sector that Lagos State prioritises fairness and accountability.”
📌 Why This Matters
✔ Protects consumers from unsafe, unfair, or substandard products
✔ Supports youth‑owned businesses by leveling the playing field
✔ Encourages confidence in the local economy
✔ Strengthens enforcement, law, and public accountability
✔ Signals investor confidence in Lagos regulatory environment
Young entrepreneurs and small business owners often face challenges from counterfeit goods, unregulated services, and opaque pricing. By reinforcing consumer protection, the Sanwo‑Olu administration aims to support a business environment where innovation, trust, and quality are rewarded.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance also urged community groups and residents to work together with regulatory bodies to report unsafe practices, support compliance, and spread awareness about consumer rights.
