Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged residents to adopt safe online practices and remain vigilant against cybercriminals as the state joins the global community to commemorate Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October.
The governor made the call on Monday, emphasising that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility that requires individuals, businesses and government institutions to work together to protect digital systems and personal information.
Sanwo-Olu warned that residents must understand common cyber risks and take proactive measures to safeguard themselves against online fraud, identity theft and other forms of cybercrime.
He noted that a lack of awareness about basic digital safety practices leaves many people vulnerable to cybercriminal activities, stressing the importance of public education in reducing such risks.
The governor explained that the state’s participation in Cybersecurity Awareness Month aligns with the global campaign led by the United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which promotes safer digital practices, improved cyber hygiene and greater public awareness of online threats.
As technology continues to shape communication, business transactions and public service delivery, Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for residents to become more conscious of their digital security and take appropriate steps to protect themselves.
Over the past three years, the Lagos State Government, under the Sanwo-Olu administration, has pursued cybersecurity initiatives aimed at strengthening digital trust and improving the state’s capacity to address emerging technological threats.
Through the Cybersecurity Advisory Board and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, the government has implemented programmes designed to promote innovation while strengthening cybersecurity awareness and resilience.
These initiatives form part of the state’s broader efforts to support a secure digital environment for residents, businesses and public institutions.
The governor’s message also highlights the importance of responsible internet use as more people rely on digital platforms for banking, education, commerce and other everyday activities.
Residents are encouraged to use strong and unique passwords, enable two-factor authentication where available, avoid suspicious links, verify requests for personal or financial information and keep their devices and applications updated.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated that protecting Lagos residents from cyber threats requires collective action, continuous awareness and a commitment to safer digital practices across the state.
