The Lagos State Government has urged residents, motorists and traders to stop dumping refuse on road medians, warning that the practice poses serious threats to road safety, environmental cleanliness and public health.
The government, in a public awareness message shared by the Lagos State Government, emphasised that road medians are essential road safety infrastructure and should not be used as dumping grounds for household or commercial waste.
It expressed concern over the growing problem of indiscriminate waste disposal in public spaces, noting that the practice contributes to environmental degradation and undermines efforts to maintain a clean and beautiful Lagos.
According to the government, the sight of heaps of refuse on road medians creates an unpleasant environment, produces offensive odours and destroys the greenery intended to improve the appearance of the city’s roads.
The state government further explained that improper waste disposal can obstruct drainage channels, increase the risk of flooding and create traffic hazards for motorists and other road users. It also warned that accumulated refuse can encourage the spread of diseases and expose residents to avoidable health risks.
The government stressed that keeping Lagos clean requires the collective responsibility of all residents, including individuals, business owners, traders and commercial drivers.
It called on members of the public to adopt responsible waste management practices by disposing of their refuse properly and using approved waste collectors rather than dumping rubbish on roadsides, medians or other unauthorised locations.
The government noted that the careless actions of a few individuals can negatively affect thousands of people who share the same public spaces.
It therefore encouraged residents to demonstrate greater environmental awareness and cooperate with the relevant authorities in maintaining clean surroundings.
The appeal forms part of broader efforts to promote environmental sanitation, improve public health and preserve the appearance of Lagos as a modern and orderly city.
The Lagos State Government reiterated that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and urged residents to support its efforts by keeping road medians free of refuse.
It maintained that responsible waste disposal remains essential to building a cleaner, safer and more attractive Lagos for everyone.
