Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has praised his deputy, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for his loyalty, commitment and contributions to the development of Lagos State, describing him as a dependable partner throughout their seven-year administration.
Sanwo-Olu made the remarks while reflecting on their political journey, recalling how Hamzat stepped down from his governorship ambition in 2018 following appeals from party leaders to support his emergence as the party’s candidate.
According to the governor, Hamzat demonstrated exceptional loyalty by accepting to run alongside him as deputy governor just five weeks after the decision, despite having his own political ambitions and years of public service experience.
He noted that their relationship had been built on trust, mutual respect and a shared commitment to governance, adding that he had never questioned Hamzat’s loyalty throughout their time in office.
The governor highlighted Hamzat’s contributions during critical periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of the Lagos Blue and Red Rail Lines and the opening of the Lekki Deep Sea Port.
Sanwo-Olu also recalled Hamzat’s previous contributions to the state’s development, including the construction of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge under former Governor Babatunde Fashola and the digitisation of government operations during the administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Describing Lagos governance as a continuous process, Sanwo-Olu compared the state’s political transition to a relay race, noting that successive administrations had built on the achievements of their predecessors since 1999.
He argued that Hamzat’s experience, engineering background and understanding of Lagos’ development plans position him to sustain ongoing projects and policies.
The governor urged residents to support the Lagos PROMISE agenda, describing Hamzat as someone already familiar with the responsibilities and direction of governance in the state.
