LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to bring quality healthcare closer to residents as the Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, organised a free health outreach for traders at Ikotun Market.
The initiative, which focused on preventive healthcare, provided market men and women with access to free health screening, medical consultations and other basic healthcare services within their business environment.
The outreach recorded an impressive turnout, with numerous traders taking advantage of the opportunity to have their health assessed without having to leave their places of business for extended periods.
The programme forms part of the Lagos State Government’s broader commitment to improving access to healthcare and encouraging residents to pay greater attention to preventive measures.
Many traders spend long hours at their businesses and may find it difficult to visit healthcare facilities for routine medical checks. By taking healthcare services directly to the market, the initiative provided an opportunity for residents to receive professional medical attention while continuing with their daily activities.
Speaking at the event, the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of Alimosho General Hospital, Dr. Akinyele Akinlade, explained that the outreach was deliberately designed to meet residents where they are.
According to him, effective healthcare should not be limited to treating people after they become seriously ill. He stressed the importance of early detection, regular health checks and preventive measures in maintaining a healthy population.
Dr. Akinlade noted that many health conditions can be better managed when detected early, making routine screening and medical consultations important components of responsible healthcare.
He said the decision to take the programme to Ikotun Market was informed by the need to reach members of the community who may not always have the time or resources to visit hospitals for routine checks.
The initiative also provided healthcare professionals with an opportunity to engage directly with members of the trading community, educate them on healthy living and encourage them to seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual symptoms.
Participants were able to interact with medical personnel and receive professional guidance on their health concerns. The outreach further served as an avenue to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and making regular medical examinations part of everyday life.
The Lagos State Government has continued to emphasise the importance of accessible and preventive healthcare as part of its efforts to improve the overall wellbeing of residents.
The Ikotun Market outreach demonstrates the value of community-based healthcare initiatives, particularly for residents whose work schedules and economic responsibilities may make routine hospital visits challenging.
With the strong participation recorded during the programme, the initiative has further highlighted the need for healthcare providers to continue taking medical services to communities, workplaces and other locations where residents can conveniently access them.
The outreach at Ikotun Market therefore represents another step towards strengthening preventive healthcare and ensuring that residents of Lagos have greater opportunities to access professional medical care before health conditions become more serious.
