Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has welcomed Vice President Kashim Shettima to New York as Nigeria prepares to participate in the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement, said the Vice President arrived in New York to represent Nigeria at the global gathering and participate in engagements focused on international development priorities.
The governor disclosed that Lagos State is scheduled to take the lead as Partner Government at the UN Global Compact Africa-Caribbean High-Level Session, where Shettima is expected to deliver the keynote address.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the session will provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for strengthening Africa and the Caribbean’s response to climate-related risks while promoting sustainable development across the regions.
He said the participation of the Vice President would help set a national direction for discussions on climate risk and the need for stronger action to address its growing impact.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos’ involvement in the high-level session reflects the state’s efforts to engage international stakeholders on issues affecting sustainable development, investment and climate resilience.
The governor also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government in advancing the country’s development priorities.
He said the Federal Government’s support would strengthen Lagos’ engagement with global investors, development partners and other international stakeholders during the UN-related activities.
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the discussions in New York would go beyond policy conversations and lead to practical opportunities for investment, funding and sustainable economic growth.
He said Lagos was prepared to leverage its participation in the global forum to attract partnerships capable of supporting development projects in the state and across Nigeria.
The governor added that the engagements would further position Lagos as a key platform for discussions on climate action, investment and sustainable development in Africa.
