Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with California to advance climate action, clean transportation and renewable energy initiatives.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement, said Lagos was focused on transforming its environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development and economic growth.
The governor noted that the Sister-State partnership between Lagos and California would provide a platform for both regions to deepen cooperation and exchange ideas on innovative solutions to climate-related challenges.
According to him, Lagos is already taking steps to promote cleaner transportation and expand the use of renewable energy as part of efforts to build a more sustainable and resilient city.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the scale of Lagos’ population and economic activities required ambitious climate solutions capable of delivering tangible benefits to residents while supporting long-term development.
He said the state was prepared to expand its climate initiatives and work with international partners to accelerate the transition towards cleaner energy and more sustainable transportation systems.
The governor, however, emphasised the importance of increased global investment in helping Lagos achieve its climate and development objectives.
He called for stronger financial support and partnerships that would enable subnational governments to move from climate plans to large-scale projects capable of improving livelihoods and protecting communities from environmental risks.
Sanwo-Olu said Lagos was ready to match its climate ambition with concrete action, adding that international investment would be critical to scaling up ongoing initiatives.
The governor’s remarks further highlighted the growing cooperation between Lagos and California following the formalisation of their Sister-State relationship.
The partnership is expected to create opportunities for collaboration in areas including climate action, clean energy, technology, transportation and sustainable economic development.
Sanwo-Olu maintained that Lagos was ready to contribute to global efforts to address climate change while ensuring that environmental sustainability remains closely linked to economic growth and improved quality of life for residents.
