The Convener of the Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG), Razaq Olokoba, has expressed support for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s glowing account of his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, describing the Governor’s testimony as a reflection of the value of experience, loyalty, teamwork and continuity in public service.
Olokoba said Sanwo-Olu’s personal account of his working relationship with Hamzat offers an important perspective on the Deputy Governor’s years of service and contributions to the development of Lagos State.
In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu recalled how Hamzat had initially aspired to become Governor in 2018 but accepted the party leadership’s decision to step aside and run alongside him as Deputy Governor. According to the Governor, Hamzat demonstrated uncommon political maturity by accepting the arrangement and committing himself fully to the responsibility of supporting the administration.
Olokoba said the account highlights an important quality in leadership: the ability to place collective responsibility above personal ambition. He noted that public service requires cooperation, discipline and a shared commitment to the interests of the people, rather than a constant pursuit of individual recognition.
The CDG Convener also pointed to Sanwo-Olu’s account of Hamzat’s involvement in major projects and critical moments in the state, including the COVID-19 response, the development of the Blue and Red rail lines and the opening of the Lekki Deep Sea Port.
He said the Governor’s testimony presents Hamzat as someone whose contributions extend beyond the ceremonial responsibilities often associated with the office of Deputy Governor. His engineering background and previous experience in public administration, Olokoba noted, are also relevant to understanding the role he has played in the state’s infrastructure and governance journey.
Olokoba further observed that the relay analogy used by Sanwo-Olu captures the importance of institutional experience and continuity in Lagos State’s development. He said the state’s progress over the years has involved successive administrations building on existing foundations, while responding to new demands and opportunities.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has offered a personal account of a working relationship that has lasted for years. His testimony provides an insight into the trust, cooperation and shared responsibilities that have shaped their administration,” Olokoba said.
The CDG Convener added that public leadership should be assessed through a combination of experience, documented contributions, policy direction and the ability to work with others in delivering public responsibilities.
He also welcomed the emphasis on the long-term Lagos development master plan, noting that infrastructure, transportation, housing, healthcare and economic growth require sustained planning and consistent implementation across administrations.
The Campaign for Dignity in Governance said the Governor’s remarks have added an important dimension to public discussion about leadership transition and the future direction of Lagos State. The group encouraged residents to examine public statements, policy proposals and records of service carefully as conversations about the state’s future continue.
Olokoba reaffirmed the group’s commitment to promoting responsible leadership, accountability, institutional development and governance that places the welfare of residents at the centre of public decision-making.
