Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken a hands-on approach to addressing environmental challenges in Lagos by joining residents in a community clean-up exercise aimed at improving sanitation across the state.
The governor was seen participating in a street cleaning effort in the Mushin area, where he worked alongside sanitation workers and local residents to clear refuse and sweep major roads. His presence at the exercise was intended to demonstrate leadership by example and to encourage Lagosians to take personal responsibility for maintaining a cleaner environment.
This initiative comes as the Lagos State Government intensifies efforts to tackle waste management issues in the state. As one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing cities, Lagos faces significant challenges related to population growth, urbanization, and the resulting pressure on its waste disposal systems. Authorities have repeatedly stressed the need for a collective approach, urging citizens to adopt better waste disposal habits and support government initiatives.
A key part of this renewed push is the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. Unlike previous years when movement was restricted during sanitation hours, the current model allows residents to move freely while still encouraging them to clean their homes, streets, and surroundings. The government believes this approach will promote voluntary compliance and foster a stronger culture of environmental responsibility.
During the exercise, Sanwo-Olu emphasized that maintaining a clean Lagos is a shared duty between the government and its citizens. He noted that improper waste disposal contributes to flooding, health risks, and environmental degradation, all of which can hinder the city’s development. By actively participating in the clean-up, he sought to reinforce the message that everyone, regardless of status, has a role to play in keeping the state clean.
Residents and community leaders who joined the exercise expressed appreciation for the governor’s involvement, describing it as a motivating factor that could inspire broader participation in future sanitation efforts.
The clean-up campaign is part of a broader strategy by the Lagos State Government to create a more sustainable and livable city. With continued public engagement and consistent enforcement of environmental regulations, authorities remain optimistic that Lagos can overcome its waste management challenges and set a standard for other urban centers in Nigeria.
