The fight against substance abuse among young people received renewed momentum in Lagos as the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, reaffirmed her commitment to protecting youths from the dangers of drug addiction.
Speaking at an awareness programme organised in collaboration with Caleb University, Dr. Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for collective action to address the growing challenge of substance abuse among young Nigerians. She noted that drug abuse continues to threaten the health, future, and productivity of many youths, making sustained advocacy and education essential.
The First Lady of Lagos State called on parents, educators, religious leaders, and community stakeholders to work together in guiding young people away from harmful substances. According to her, prevention through awareness, mentorship, and support remains one of the most effective ways to curb the menace.
The event also featured an engaging theatrical performance led by the Vice-Chancellor of Caleb University, Professor Nosa Owens-Ibie, whose dramatic presentation drew comparisons with the storytelling excellence associated with the renowned Christian film ministry, Mount Zion. Through a creative blend of drama and education, the performance highlighted the devastating consequences of drug abuse on individuals, families, and society.
Participants at the programme commended the innovative approach, noting that drama remains a powerful tool for communicating important social messages and influencing behavioural change among young people.
Dr. Sanwo-Olu reiterated the Lagos State Government’s commitment to initiatives that promote healthy lifestyles, mental well-being, and positive values among youths. She emphasized that safeguarding the younger generation from substance abuse requires sustained collaboration between government institutions, educational bodies, families, and civil society organisations.
The programme concluded with a renewed call for vigilance, awareness, and collective responsibility in the ongoing effort to build a drug-free society and secure a brighter future for Nigeria’s youth.
