The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations as part of ongoing efforts to improve water production and expand access to safe drinking water across the state.
The project, being executed through the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), is aimed at boosting water production capacity, enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening the state’s water infrastructure to meet the growing needs of residents.
According to the state government, the initiative was approved and funded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration as part of its commitment to providing reliable, safe and sustainable water supply for millions of Lagosians.
The installation of the new pumps is a key component of the “Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 & 3,” a major infrastructure renewal project focused on modernising critical water production facilities.
The rehabilitation programme is expected to improve the performance of the facilities, reduce operational challenges and significantly increase the volume of treated water available for distribution across the state.
The government said the intervention reflects its continued investment in critical infrastructure and its determination to build a resilient water sector capable of supporting the demands of Africa’s fastest-growing megacity.
When completed, the upgraded facilities are expected to enhance the efficiency of water production, improve service delivery and extend access to potable water to more households and communities throughout Lagos.
The project aligns with the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader agenda of improving public utilities and ensuring that residents have greater access to essential services that support economic growth, public health and a better quality of life.
