Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has joined traditional worshippers and residents across Lagos in celebrating Isese Day, describing the occasion as an important opportunity to honour the state’s rich cultural heritage, traditions and values passed down through generations.
In a message marking the celebration, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of preserving indigenous culture and ensuring that traditional values remain relevant for future generations.
According to the governor, Isese Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians, particularly those who identify with Yoruba cultural traditions, to reflect on their roots and appreciate the cultural practices that have shaped their identity.
“Today, we celebrate Isese Day, honouring our heritage, traditions and the rich cultural identity passed down through generations,” the governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu noted that culture remains an essential part of the identity of any society, stressing that communities have a responsibility to protect their heritage and ensure that valuable traditions are not lost over time.
He said Lagos, as a cosmopolitan state with people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, continues to benefit from the richness of its indigenous traditions. The governor therefore encouraged residents to appreciate and respect the diverse cultural practices that contribute to the vibrancy of the state.
“Our culture is an important part of who we are and we must never lose sight of the values and traditions that connect us to our heritage,” he said.
The governor further stressed the need for older generations to pass cultural knowledge, values and traditions to younger people. He described this responsibility as crucial to maintaining a strong connection between the past, present and future.
Sanwo-Olu also used the occasion to commend those who continue to preserve and promote Yoruba culture, particularly traditional institutions, cultural groups, families and individuals who keep indigenous practices alive.
He wished everyone observing Isese Day a peaceful and meaningful celebration, while acknowledging their contribution to maintaining Lagos’ vibrant cultural identity.
“I wish everyone celebrating a peaceful and meaningful Isese Day. Thank you for keeping our traditions alive and contributing to the vibrant spirit of Lagos,” he said.
Isese Day is observed by adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion as a period to celebrate and appreciate Yoruba indigenous spiritual and cultural heritage. The celebration has continued to attract attention across southwestern Nigeria as part of broader efforts to preserve indigenous culture and traditions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s message underscores the Lagos State Government’s emphasis on cultural heritage and the importance of ensuring that the state’s rich history and traditions remain a living part of contemporary society.
