Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured residents that the State Government is taking urgent steps to address the recent delays in waste collection across the state, describing the situation as unacceptable.
The Governor acknowledged concerns over the accumulation of refuse in some parts of Lagos, stressing that his administration was committed to resolving the challenges affecting the state’s waste management system and ensuring more efficient collection and disposal of waste.
Sanwo-Olu said the government was working to identify and fix the underlying issues responsible for the recent disruptions in waste collection. He explained that the ongoing interventions were aimed at rebuilding and strengthening the system to make it more effective, reliable and responsive to the needs of residents.
According to him, maintaining a clean and healthy Lagos is a shared responsibility between the government and residents. While assuring Lagosians that the government would continue to improve waste management operations, he urged members of the public to support the efforts by disposing of their waste responsibly.
The Governor particularly warned residents against dumping refuse on roads, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations. He noted that indiscriminate dumping undermines government efforts to maintain a clean environment and can contribute to blocked drainage systems, flooding and other environmental challenges.
Sanwo-Olu further cautioned that residents who engage in illegal waste disposal would face legal consequences, as the State Government would continue to enforce its environmental laws.
He called on Lagosians to cooperate with waste management authorities and adopt responsible waste disposal practices as the government works to restore efficiency to the collection system.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos, noting that the success of the waste management system depends on both effective government action and responsible behaviour by residents.
He assured Lagosians that the government was addressing the challenges and working to deliver noticeable improvements in waste collection across the state.
